Technical or cotton t-shirt: who should wear which?

The person running does not need the same t-shirt as the person cheering from the stands. Here is when to choose a technical t-shirt, when to stay with cotton, and proof, from our product pages, that technical does not always cost more.

Custom technical t-shirt in royal blue: a runner wears a sports t-shirt with a small light-blue TKNP logo on the chest, the fabric chosen for effort rather than cotton.

Technical or cotton t-shirt: who should wear which?

The technical t-shirt goes to whoever makes the effort: a polyester knit that four product pages in our range call quick-drying, while cotton absorbs about 8.5% of its weight in water, according to Wikipedia. Staff, supporters and the souvenir t-shirt can stay with cotton.

The essentials before choosing:

  • Our sports t-shirt range counts 10 models on 26 October 2026: all polyester, none polyamide, and nine show 130 to 160 g/m².
  • According to Wikipedia, a cotton fibre holds about 8.5% of its weight in water; polyester, for its part, absorbs little moisture.
  • In a Ghent University study published in 2014, polyester t-shirts worn for an indoor cycling session smelled stronger than cotton t-shirts.
  • On the three JHK product pages compared, a technical t-shirt and a cotton t-shirt can be ordered online with the same techniques (DTF transfer, screen printing, embroidery), although we advise against embroidery below 180 g/m², which rules out these technical t-shirts; sublimation, on quote, only works on a light polyester.

In a club, a race or a sports event, not everyone wears the t-shirt for the same reason: the athlete runs or trains in it, the staff spend their day in it, the supporter puts it on for the stands or for town. Technical or cotton t-shirt: the right choice therefore depends on who wears it. Here is what our product pages, two Wikipedia articles and a university study on odour say, then what each fabric changes for the decoration and the price of your merch.

What is a technical t-shirt?

The technical t-shirt is the sports t-shirt cut from a synthetic-fibre knit and designed for effort. On the 10 product pages of our custom sports t-shirt range, re-read on 26 October 2026, all 10 are polyester, alone or blended with a little elastane.

Their descriptions use the same words. The knit is described as piqué on three JHK models and "birdseye" on the B&C model; five of these t-shirts have raglan sleeves; four describe themselves as quick-drying or announce a fabric that dries quickly; Just Cool's Cool T promises a fabric that helps perspiration evaporate. Four of the ten pages state recycled polyester, including JHK's Man Sport T-Shirt and Jt Sport, and two blend polyester with elastane (5% and 9%).

What is the difference between a technical t-shirt and a cotton t-shirt?

Between a technical t-shirt and a cotton t-shirt, the gap that matters is water: cotton absorbs far more of it than polyester. According to Wikipedia's French article on cotton, cotton fibres absorb about 8.5% of their weight in water, a property that made it the fabric of towels and bathrobes; Wikipedia's French article on polyester credits polyester, on the contrary, with low moisture absorption.

Our technical t-shirt pages carry the argument in the manufacturers' words: breathable, quick-drying. Tee Jays' Cooldry Tee is described as "soft, breathable and lightweight" and "quick drying"; Pen Duick's Firstee Men is presented in "100% quick-drying polyester"; Just Cool's Cool T, in Neoteric polyester, "helps evaporate perspiration". None of these sources gives a measured drying time: keep the principle, not a stopwatch figure.

Fabric weight, for its part, does not separate the two families: on the product pages read, the weights overlap. The nine technical t-shirts in our range whose page gives the fabric weight show 130 to 160 g/m² (130 g/m² for four JHK models, 140 for three others, 160 for Tee Jays' Cooldry Tee and Just Cool's baselayer), and JHK's Man Regular T-Shirt, in pre-shrunk cotton, weighs 155 g/m². At JHK, three product pages allow a comparison within one manufacturer:

SizesS to 3XLS to XXLXS to 5XL

For a club dressing members of every build, the gap in sizes and colours matters as much as the fibre: on these three pages, the cotton t-shirt runs from XS to 5XL in 84 colours, while the two technical t-shirts stop at 3XL or XXL, in 16 and 5 colours. A colourway with the same name, Royal Blue, appears on both the Man Sport T-Shirt and the Man Regular T-Shirt: athletes and volunteers can dress in the same shade, each in their own fabric, provided you compare the two on a blank sample first, since two fibres do not necessarily take dye the same way.

Cotton has a downside that Wikipedia's French article lists among its drawbacks: a tendency to shrink. The Man Regular T-Shirt is presented by its product page as pre-shrunk; our article on clothes that shrink in the wash explains what this label means.

Does a technical t-shirt smell of sweat more than a cotton one?

In a Ghent University study published in 2014 in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, polyester t-shirts worn for an intensive indoor cycling session smelled significantly less pleasant, and more intense, than the cotton t-shirts. The researchers collected the t-shirts of 26 people and left them for 28 hours before a trained odour panel assessed them.

The study also found bacteria of the micrococci family on almost all the synthetic t-shirts, and almost only on them, while staphylococci were abundant on both fabrics. It measures odour after one session and 28 hours of waiting, not after a wash. For the comparison between polyester and polyamide on the same point, see our polyamide or polyester comparison.

Technical or cotton t-shirt: which one for the athlete, the staff and the supporters?

The technical t-shirt goes to those who make the effort, the cotton t-shirt to those who live the event around it: in a club, a race or a sports event, it is the person wearing it, and what they will do in it, that decides the fabric. The same logo can go on both.

  • The athlete, in training as in competition: the technical t-shirt, the one of the two that absorbs less sweat, and four product pages in our range promise it quick drying.
  • Volunteers and event staff: if they keep running back and forth between stations in full sun, the logic of effort applies to them too; if they hold a stand or the bib desk, cotton remains an option, and the Man Regular T-Shirt's sizes from XS to 5XL help to dress the whole team.
  • The t-shirt handed out at the finish (the "finisher" tee) or sold in the race village: if you picture it worn around town afterwards, cotton, which Wikipedia's French article describes as a soft and comfortable textile, suits it well, as our running t-shirt guide also points out.
  • Supporters and club merch: a t-shirt worn in the stands or every day does not need the qualities of an effort t-shirt, and cotton has its full place there.

Beyond sport, our cotton or polyester comparison weighs the two fabrics for dressing a team all year round.

Which decoration on a technical t-shirt, and on a cotton t-shirt?

A technical t-shirt and a cotton t-shirt are decorated online the same way: on the JHK pages of the Man Sport T-Shirt, the Jt Sport and the Man Regular T-Shirt, three techniques are bought directly online, with their price: DTF transfer, screen printing and embroidery. DTF transfer "bonds to almost any fibre, cotton or polyester", according to our technique page, and screen printing works on any flat textile.

The fibre mostly changes two techniques, at opposite ends: our page reserves direct-to-garment (DTG) printing for mostly-cotton fabrics. Conversely, sublimation, priced on quote from 10 units, only works on a light polyester, and our page rules it out on cotton. For decorating a polyester race t-shirt and choosing the model, see our custom running t-shirt guide.

Embroidery, which we do not recommend on any t-shirt lighter than 180 g/m², does not separate the three models compared: technical or cotton, they stay below that threshold, at 130 and 155 g/m².

A decorated technical t-shirt is washed according to its model's care label, like a cotton t-shirt, and its logo according to its own instructions, detailed in our article on washing a decorated t-shirt.

Does a custom technical t-shirt cost more than a cotton t-shirt?

A custom technical t-shirt does not necessarily cost more than a cotton t-shirt: at JHK, on tknp.io, the decorated Man Sport T-Shirt costs €0.39 to €0.43 excluding VAT more than the cotton Man Regular T-Shirt, and the Jt Sport €0.40 to €0.45 excluding VAT less, at the 10, 25, 50 and 100 unit tiers, whether the logo goes on as an A6 DTF transfer or is screen printed in one colour (public price grids read on 26 October 2026, given as an indication and detailed below). Nothing on these pages shows what share of these gaps the fabric accounts for: price is compared model by model.

Unless stated otherwise, each price below assumes a single run of one model, with an identical logo in the same place, at the product page's public rate, without the discount reserved for verified organisations. These are the prices shown on 26 October 2026 on the three JHK product pages of tknp.io, as an indication: in euros excluding VAT, the t-shirt with its decoration, for a single position (A6 format for the transfer), in the most affordable colour and standard sizes, with the standard two-week production time, delivery extra. The Jt Sport and Man Regular T-Shirt pages point out that the brand charges a little more for some colours and for the largest sizes.

On a run of 25 t-shirts with an A6 DTF transfer, the Man Regular T-Shirt comes to €147.00 excluding VAT; the Man Sport T-Shirt costs €10.25 more (€157.25), the Jt Sport €10.75 less (€136.25). The pages also show an embroidery line, left aside here: these three t-shirts weigh less than 180 g/m², and we do not recommend embroidery on them.

A decorated t-shirt, technical or cotton, has a minimum order of 10 units per reference; our guide to custom company clothing explains where this threshold comes from.

How do you try a technical t-shirt and a cotton t-shirt before the club's run?

To try a technical t-shirt and a cotton t-shirt, order one blank of each, as samples, before choosing the club's fabric. The Man Sport T-Shirt, Jt Sport and Man Regular T-Shirt pages let you add the t-shirt to the basket blank, and the tknp.io FAQ presents a blank garment, ordered on its own, as the right way to check, before any run, the size, the fabric and the colour.

Give both t-shirts to the same person, for two comparable sessions: the Man Sport T-Shirt for the first, the Man Regular T-Shirt for the second, each washed afterwards according to its care label. You will then know which one dried first on the line, which one kept the smell of the session and which one hangs best once washed; add the Jt Sport if a unisex cut appeals to you. The chosen model is then customised from its product page: its "Customise online" button leads to the designer, where the club's logo takes its place on the t-shirt, and the decorated run starts at 10 units of that model, sizes and colours mixed.

FAQ

Domande frequenti

Can a technical t-shirt be worn outside sport?

A technical t-shirt can be worn away from training, and some manufacturers present it that way: the French product page of JHK's Jt Sport describes it as suited to sporting use as well as everyday team wear, and that of the Man Sport T-Shirt as suited to team outfits as well as events. For staff or a team who will wear it through a whole event day, it therefore remains an option, just like cotton.

Are there technical t-shirts in polyamide?

No t-shirt in our sports t-shirt range is polyamide: all 10 are polyester, two of them with a little elastane. Polyamide, the family of fibres that includes nylon, has its own qualities, which our article on polyamide details.

Can you find technical t-shirts in a club's colours?

A club finds more or fewer colours depending on the technical t-shirt chosen: among our 10 sports t-shirts, the number of colours ranges from 3 for Just Cool's Active Recycled Baselayer to 50 for the same brand's Cool T. Pen Duick's Firstee Men and Just Cool's Contrast Cool T offer 17 each.

Are there long-sleeved technical t-shirts?

Two of our 10 sports t-shirts have long sleeves: JHK's Man Long Sleeve Sport T-Shirt, in 130 g/m² 100% polyester piqué, and Just Cool's Active Recycled Baselayer, a close-fitting base layer in recycled polyester and elastane, at 160 g/m².
