Promotional clothing: which garment will people actually wear?

In an ASI survey, four in five people asked would keep a promotional T-shirt for at least a year. Here is how to choose the one for your trade show, your team or your clients so that it actually gets worn.

At a trade show stand, a host in a mustard promotional sweatshirt with the TKNP logo hands a tote bag to a visitor, in front of a counter of promotional clothing and branded items: folded T-shirts, tote bags, caps and badges, with a TKNP roll-up bann

Promotional clothing: which garment will people actually wear?

The promotional clothing people actually wear is the kind they could have picked themselves: useful, pleasant, good-looking, in their size. For an event, a T-shirt; for a team, a heavier T-shirt and a sweatshirt; for clients, an adjustable cap or a tote bag. And a discreet logo on the chest.

The essentials before you order:

  • According to the 2026 study by the ASI, the American promotional products institute, four consumers in five would keep a promotional T-shirt for at least a year, and nine in ten would wear it at least once a month.
  • To keep a promotional T-shirt, the people surveyed by the ASI give almost equal weight to its usefulness, the pleasure of having it and its look.
  • According to the same study, an outerwear garment (sweatshirt, fleece, jacket) builds up around 9,000 brand views over its lifetime, against 3,500 for a well-liked T-shirt.
  • Promotional clothing in the wrong size has little chance of being worn: one size per person, or an adjustable accessory when nobody's size is known.

Promotional clothing only works for your brand on the days someone wears it. The one that stays folded in a drawer after the trade show cost as much as the one that comes out every week, and it shows your logo to nobody. Choosing promotional clothing therefore means choosing a garment the person receiving it could have bought for themselves: right for the occasion, pleasant to wear, in their size, with a logo they are happy to show. Here is how to make that choice, occasion by occasion, with the figures from the 2026 ASI study and real models from our product pages.

What is promotional clothing?

Promotional clothing is a garment customised with the logo of a company, an association or an event, given away or handed out to make that name known: a T-shirt, sweatshirt, polo shirt or jacket. It is a communication medium that moves around with the person wearing it. The word describes the intention of the giver; the person who receives it is not wearing an advert, they are wearing a garment, and they will only keep it if they like it.

The line between the promotional item you hand out and the merch a community wears because it identifies with it is drawn in our article on promotional items and merch.

Promotional clothing or promotional textiles: what is the difference?

What people search for as promotional textiles goes beyond clothing: the search also covers fabric accessories, caps, bucket hats, canvas bags (tote bags). A cap such as Beechfield's Ultimate 5 Panel Cap, in brushed cotton and one adjustable size, or a bag such as Westford Mill's Bag For Life, in 140 g/m² cotton, are chosen by the same rule as clothing: how the recipient will use them afterwards.

Do people really keep promotional clothing?

For a promotional T-shirt, most consumers say yes: in the 2026 study by the ASI (Advertising Specialty Institute, the American promotional products institute), four consumers in five say they would keep a promotional T-shirt for at least a year after receiving it, and nine in ten that they would wear it at least once a month. The institute concludes that a well-liked branded T-shirt builds up around 3,500 brand views over its lifetime.

The study surveyed nearly 5,000 consumers in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe; the article publishing the T-shirt figure does not say in which countries it was measured. The ASI calculation multiplies three factors: how long the item is kept, how often it is used and how many people are met while using it. A garment kept longer therefore pushes the count up, and a garment that never leaves the wardrobe leaves it at zero.

What makes people want to keep promotional clothing?

For a promotional T-shirt, three reasons for keeping it weigh almost equally according to the ASI: it is useful, it is enjoyable to have, and it looks good. Design and comfort therefore matter as much as the need for one more T-shirt.

Consumers surveyed in Europe and Mexico put usefulness first: 74% of them would keep a promotional item because it is useful to them. And when they buy merch themselves, at an event or in a shop, 65% say quality weighs on their decision, well ahead of design (38%). For promotional clothing, we draw four choices from them: the occasion, the quality, the size and where the logo goes.

Which promotional clothing should you choose for each occasion?

The right promotional garment depends on who receives it and where they will wear it afterwards: a trade show visitor, an employee and a client will not use it in the same way. The table matches four occasions with models from our product pages.

Which promotional clothing for a trade show or an event?

At a trade show, a festival or a race, promotional clothing is handed out on the spot, sometimes to people you will not see again: a T-shirt for participants, a canvas bag for visitors. Our events page advises planning quantities audience by audience, staff, volunteers and guests, from the brief onwards. The staff, for their part, wear their outfit from morning to evening: a 280 g/m² hoodie, such as the College Hoodie by Just Hoods, which combines cotton (80%) and polyester (20%), can be used again at the next event. At a trade show, the choice between the passing gift and the garment for a booked meeting is covered in our guide to trade show merch.

Which promotional clothing to dress a team?

For a company team, promotional clothing carries your brand image at the office, and it gains from being worn at weekends too: a T-shirt or sweatshirt you pull on without thinking, not a work uniform. At Stanley/Stella, two models are described by their product pages as made for everyday wear as much as for a company image: a T-shirt, the Creator 2.0, cut from a combed organic cotton jersey (180 g/m², medium fit), and a hoodie, the Cruiser 2.0, cut from a brushed organic cotton fleece (350 g/m²). Start with two or three garments your colleagues could have chosen themselves, as our companies page advises. Five company T-shirt models are compared in our company T-shirt guide; the polo shirt, often kept for client meetings, is chosen on other criteria, which we cover separately.

Which promotional clothing should you give clients?

For clients, promotional clothing runs into their size, which you do not know: our guide to client gifts advises betting on items that have none, and details the VAT on a business gift. Among our product pages, a five-panel cap, Beechfield's Ultimate 5 Panel Cap, comes in one size, with a strap that adjusts to the head, and can be embroidered online; Westford Mill's Bag For Life offers a 33 x 36 cm face for the logo.

Sweatshirt, T-shirt or jacket: which shows your logo the most?

According to the 2026 ASI study, outerwear (fleeces, jackets, sweatshirts) builds up around 9,000 brand views over its lifetime, against 3,500 for a well-liked T-shirt. A typical promotional item totals 3,300, and the canvas bag the institute uses as an example around 5,000.

These figures are averages per family, calculated from how long the item is kept, how often it is used and how many people are met. They do not say that a sweatshirt will be worn more than a T-shirt in your team: they are a reminder that a logo's visibility depends on time and frequency, and that a garment kept for a long time and taken out often ends up being seen more.

How do you spot quality promotional clothing on a product page?

Quality promotional clothing can be recognised on its product page by three lines, the weight, the composition and the fit, which our guide to the textile product sheet teaches you to read one by one. Here is what those lines say about the models mentioned in this article.

ModelGarmentWeightCompositionFit
#E150 Men, B&CT-shirt145 g/m²100% cottonmen's
Creator 2.0, Stanley/StellaT-shirt180 g/m²combed ring-spun organic cotton (100%), except the Heather Haze marl: organic at 70%, recycled at 30%medium, unisex

None of these lines alone guarantees that a garment will be worn, but they let you compare two models without holding them, and make an informed choice between a T-shirt you hand out and a T-shirt you want to see back at the office.

Large logo or discreet logo: which gets worn more?

For promotional clothing you want to see worn at the office as well as at weekends, start with a chest logo; keep the large back print for event staff, who need to be spotted from a distance. No figure measures the effect of logo size on how often a garment is worn, but the ASI suggests a lead for Europe: given how much European consumers value quality and a more upmarket look, practical items with simpler branding might perform better there. Our inspiration of a T-shirt with a one-colour chest logo shows an example: a single-ink screen print, at 80 x 80 mm, on a sand #E190 Men. On a fleece, our inspiration of an embroidered pictogram on the chest fits within 80 x 50 mm of embroidery. For the possible placements, from chest to back, and the size that suits each one, see our article detailing where to put a logo.

How many sizes should you plan for promotional clothing?

Promotional clothing that is too big or too small has little chance of being worn, whatever its quality: plan one size per person as soon as the garment comes in sizes. On our product pages, ten sizes are available, from XXS to 5XL, for the Creator 2.0 as for the Cruiser 2.0; the #E150 Men and the #E190 Men run from XS to 5XL.

A printed or embroidered batch starts at 10 garments per model, and sizes and colours can be mixed within it: ten people, ten sizes, one single batch. Our method for collecting sizes avoids mistakes when you gather the group's sizes. The price, the minimum and the lead time of that batch have their own guide: the one on custom clothing for companies.

Reorder the garment your teams actually wore

The best clue for your next promotional clothing order is the previous one: three months after a trade show or a company retreat, look at which garment your teams or volunteers are still wearing. Promotional clothing that comes out every week has become your team's merch; that is the one to make again. On tknp.io, the free pro account brings together, for the whole team, the garments you have customised, your quotes and your orders: the model that has proved itself can be reordered online with its logo, from 10 garments.

FAQ

Veelgestelde vragen

Which promotional item do French consumers most like to receive?

The T-shirt, according to the 2026 ASI study: it is the promotional item consumers surveyed in France would be most excited to receive, as in Germany and Italy. In the United Kingdom, the fleece comes first; across the European countries in the study, the power bank comes second.

Is eco-friendly promotional clothing better received?

Yes, according to the 2026 ASI study: nine consumers in ten surveyed in Europe and Mexico would have an even better view of an advertiser after receiving a sustainable promotional item, against three in four in the United States. On a garment, the label comes from the manufacturer: Stanley/Stella obtained GOTS certification for its Creator 2.0 T-shirt, as our product page shows, and nothing extends it to the print or embroidery you add.

Which promotional clothing should you give in winter?

A heavy sweatshirt or a fleece. At Stanley/Stella, the hooded Cruiser 2.0 and its crew neck cousin, the Changer 2.0, are cut from a heavy brushed organic cotton fleece, and their colours include a mustard ochre (Ochre). For a fleece, our inspirations embroider a pictogram on the chest of JHK's Polar Fleece Man.

Can you put two logos on promotional clothing?

Yes, two at most, for example on the chest and on the back, and always in a single technique: two embroideries, or two prints made with the same process (two screen prints, for example). Two different techniques on the same garment, such as embroidery and screen printing, would age at different rates.
