Class sweatshirt budget: the real price, and who pays for what?

How much does a class sweatshirt really cost, and who fronts the money? The budget guide written from the organiser's side, with real figures and a zero-risk method.

Four students seen from above, arm in arm on an autumn campus path covered in leaves, wear their university class merch: an ecru hoodie, a t-shirt and crewneck sweatshirts in ecru and navy, embroidered with TKNP.

At tknp.io, a class sweatshirt embroidered over the heart costs €17.88 excluding VAT per unit for 50 College Hoodies (a 280 g/m² Just Hoods hoodie), logo embroidered at 8 x 10 cm, in the cheapest colour and excluding shipping (indicative price, recorded on 20 October 2026). Thanks to the tknp.io Store's pre-order, nobody fronts any money: everyone pays for their own sweatshirt directly.

The essentials in 30 seconds:

  • Our prices: €17.88 excluding VAT per unit for 50 Just Hoods College Hoodies embroidered over the heart (8 x 10 cm), €31.95 excluding VAT for 50 Stanley/Stella Cruiser 2.0 embroidered the same way; base colour, excluding shipping, indicative prices from 20 October 2026.
  • The best result-to-price ratio: logo embroidered over the heart, artwork printed on the back.
  • Risk-free funding: pre-orders on a dedicated Store (no upfront cash, no stock, no chasing people).
  • The timeline: 4 to 6 weeks between launching the project and delivery.

Every new academic year, the same scene: someone floats the idea of a class sweatshirt, everyone is in, and three weeks later the project has stalled because nobody can answer two simple questions. What budget should you plan for the class sweatshirt? And who fronts the money?

This guide answers both, from the organiser's side, whether you sit on a school's student union (BDE), run a university association or are simply the volunteer your class picked. No supplier jargon, no "ask for a quote": the real figures, our current prices, the traps that sink a student association's cash flow, and the method that lets your class sweatshirt fund itself.

The real price of a class sweatshirt in 2026

For a realistic budget, start from our prices: for 50 units embroidered over the heart (8 x 10 cm), the Just Hoods College Hoodie, at 280 g/m², costs €17.88 excluding VAT per unit, and the Stanley/Stella Cruiser 2.0, heavier (350 g/m²) and GOTS certified, €31.95 excluding VAT. These indicative prices date from 20 October 2026: excluding shipping and VAT, for a single decoration in the most accessible colour; the breakdown by quantity is in the worked example below. The final price depends on your project (model, quantity, decoration), but these orders of magnitude are enough to build a solid budget.

Three dials move this price:

  • The quality of the garment. The fabric weight (the weight of the fabric per square metre, which gives it its thickness and how well it holds its shape) affects the price: at tknp.io, the College Hoodie weighs 280 g/m² and the Cruiser 2.0, more expensive, 350 g/m². A sweatshirt that keeps its shape wash after wash is what people notice in the end-of-year photo.
  • The decoration technique. Printing or embroidery, small logo or full back artwork: the technique you choose weighs heavily in the final price (details just below).
  • The quantity ordered. Prices are tiered: the bigger the class, the lower the unit price. A class of 100 pays less per sweatshirt than a group of 25.

Embroidery or printing: the real price difference

For a logo over the heart, embroidery costs about the same as printing; for large artwork on the back, printing is the way to go. For 50 College Hoodies with a logo over the heart, our prices are €16.08 excluding VAT per unit with an A6 DTF transfer, €17.88 excluding VAT with 8 x 10 cm embroidery and €18.69 excluding VAT with A6 DTG printing: embroidery costs €1.80 more than the DTF transfer and €0.81 less than DTG printing (a single decoration, most accessible colour, excluding shipping, indicative prices from 20 October 2026). Our pick of the best sweatshirts to customise details the embroidery / printing gap model by model.

Printing (the artwork is printed onto the fabric, using DTF transfer, screen printing or digital printing depending on the project) is the natural choice for large artwork: a full back with the class design, a detailed illustration, colour gradients. DTF transfer also suits small runs.

Embroidery (the artwork is stitched in thread) gives the most premium and most durable result: a logo embroidered over the heart lasts for years without budging. The trade-off is that its cost rises with the size and complexity of the design: our listed prices are for an 8 x 10 cm embroidery over the heart.

The classic combo for classes that want the best of both worlds: logo embroidered over the heart, artwork printed on the back. You get the premium finish where people see it, and creative freedom where it counts.

Hooded, zip-up or crewneck: the model matters too

The model shifts the starting budget: for the same fabric, a crewneck is cheaper than a hoodie. At tknp.io, in the Stanley/Stella range at 350 g/m², embroidered over the heart at 8 x 10 cm for 50 units, the Changer 2.0 crewneck comes to €25.43 excluding VAT per unit and the Cruiser 2.0 hoodie to €31.95 excluding VAT (a single decoration, most accessible colour, excluding shipping, indicative prices from 20 October 2026).

  • The hooded sweatshirt (hoodie): the great class classic, the most requested, more expensive than the crewneck.
  • The zip-up: practical to wear over other layers.
  • The crewneck: cheaper than the hoodie and more understated, the one that shows off embroidery best.

The organiser's advice: pick ONE model for the whole class rather than a mix. A single model simplifies the order, strengthens the group effect in photos, and keeps the best volume price.

Who pays for what: the three funding models

In the most relaxed model, each student pays for their own sweatshirt before it is made: that's the pre-order. Three models exist, from the riskiest to the most relaxed, and the wrong choice derails many projects.

Model 1: the association fronts everything (avoid)

The student union or association orders 80 sweatshirts, pays the invoice, then chases payments for two months. It's the historical model, and it's a problem machine: the association's cash is tied up, latecomers never all pay, and sizes ordered by guesswork end up as dead stock. If your association can front the whole invoice (80 College Hoodies embroidered over the heart: 80 x €17.88 = €1,430.40 excluding VAT, before VAT, shipping and a second decoration) and has plenty of patience, why not. Otherwise, run.

Model 2: the group order with payment collected first

The organiser collects the money (online kitty, bank transfers) THEN places a group order for the exact number paid. Much healthier: no upfront cash, no stock. The price you pay is logistics: chasing latecomers, keeping the size spreadsheet up to date, handling the "I changed my mind" messages. Count on real hours of volunteer work, and a group chat that never ends.

Model 3: the pre-order campaign (the modern standard)

Everyone orders and pays for THEIR size directly on an online Store dedicated to the class, during a pre-order window. When it closes, if the sweatshirt reaches its reservation threshold, exactly as many sweatshirts are made as there are paid orders. No cash advance, no Excel sheet, no chasing: the Store does the admin work for you. On tknp.io, that's the Store: opening one costs nothing, nor does publishing a campaign; each pre-order stays open for 7 to 21 days, time for everyone to reserve their size and pay online. Schools rely on the same principle to help fund the class trip, with a selling price set slightly above cost.

The budget calendar: delays cost money

A class sweatshirt budget is also a matter of time. The full circuit (choosing the design, pre-order window, production, delivery) generally takes 4 to 6 weeks. Two direct consequences for the budget:

  • Ordering early costs less. On our product pages, for a direct order, the production time moves the price: 10% more for production in 1 week, the base price in 2 weeks, 5% less in 4 weeks. As standard, allow 10 working days between ordering and shipping, customisation included, and the basket gives you the estimated delivery date.
  • The pre-order window has an optimal length: about two weeks. Too short, and part of the class misses the train. Too long, and the momentum fades and the undecided never order.

Launch the project at the start of the academic year so the sweatshirts get worn all winter: it's the window that maximises the number of orders and makes every euro count.

Worked example: the budget for a class of 60 students

For a class of 60 students, 60 College Hoodies embroidered over the heart come to €1,072.80 excluding VAT at tknp.io (60 x €17.88, 50 tier), or €17.88 excluding VAT per student, before VAT, shipping and a second decoration. Here are our unit prices as our product pages showed them on 20 October 2026 (excluding VAT, a single decoration, most accessible colour, excluding shipping, indicative):

Model and decoration10 sweatshirts2550100
College Hoodie (Just Hoods JH001, 280 g/m²), blank€15.11€14.55€13.99€13.52
College Hoodie, heart embroidery 8 x 10 cm€19.55€18.54€17.88€16.45
Cruiser 2.0 (Stanley/Stella STSU177, 350 g/m²), heart embroidery 8 x 10 cm€34.74€33.02€31.95€30.03

A second decoration (the class artwork on the back) and shipping come on top of this amount.

These prices are indicative, not a quote: the quote prevails, and some colours, as well as the larger sizes, cost a little more. They give you the right order of magnitude to announce a price to your class, once VAT is added, without bad surprises.

With a pre-order, everyone pays for their own sweatshirt and nobody fronts anything. If the association wants to make a margin (to fund the integration weekend, the gala or upcoming projects), it sets the price students pay, VAT included, above our price at the volume reached, once VAT is added (the prices in this guide, excluding VAT, give its order of magnitude): its pot is what remains between that price and our price for the volume reached, transferred to its bank account after delivery, online payment fees deducted.

Cutting the budget without sacrificing quality: the levers that work

If the total is more than the class can pay, here are the levers to pull, in order, from the most effective to the most painful:

  1. Play the volume. Open the pre-order to two classes, the whole programme or sister associations: every quantity tier lowers the unit price for everyone.
  2. Simplify the decoration. Heart embroidery alone, without the back print, saves you the price of a second decoration on each sweatshirt. The sweatshirt stays premium, it just loses its B-side.
  3. Switch to a crewneck. Same fabric quality, a lower entry price than the hoodie.
  4. Only as a last resort: lower the fabric weight. This is the lever we advise against: the saving shows and you can feel it, and the whole class's image carries it.

What NOT to do to save money: order without pre-orders, hoping to "get paid back later". The apparent saving turns into dead stock and frozen cash, the two most expensive items of all.

The three traps that blow the budget

  1. Ordering "extra sizes just in case". That's dead stock paid for by the association. With pre-orders, the problem disappears: only what has been reserved gets produced.
  2. Choosing the absolute cheapest. A class sweatshirt is not a uniform: it's a garment people have to WANT to wear in the street, and the memory that will remain of those years. A sweatshirt at the market's rock-bottom price that pills within a semester ends up at the back of the wardrobe, and the memory with it. The right calculation is cost per year of the sweatshirt's life, not the sticker price.
  3. Neglecting the design to move fast. Design costs nothing in the budget, but it determines everything: almost the whole class orders a sweatshirt it is proud of, while a failed one quickly hits a ceiling. Take the week you need to get the mock-up approved by the group. If the logo itself is the sticking point, first see how to design a student union logo that looks good on a sweatshirt.

What to remember before launching your project

A class sweatshirt budget comes down to three decisions: the price per person (at tknp.io, €17.88 excluding VAT per unit for 50 College Hoodies embroidered over the heart, indicative price from 20 October 2026: a sweatshirt people will proudly wear in the street, not one they'll forget in a wardrobe), the decoration combo (heart embroidery + back print as the standard), and above all the funding model. On that last point, the verdict is in: pre-orders on a dedicated Store eliminate the cash advance, the dead stock and the chasing, the three items that cost organisers the most, in money as well as energy.

Your class deserves better than a spreadsheet and two months of reminders. Open your Store, launch the pre-order, and focus on the design: it's the only genuinely fun part of the project.

FAQ

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How much does a class sweatshirt cost per person?

At tknp.io, allow €17.88 excluding VAT per person for 50 Just Hoods College Hoodies (280 g/m²) embroidered over the heart at 8 x 10 cm, and €31.95 excluding VAT for 50 Stanley/Stella Cruiser 2.0 (350 g/m²) embroidered the same way. These are indicative prices recorded on 20 October 2026, excluding shipping and VAT, for a single decoration in the most accessible colour. The bigger the class, the lower the unit price: €16.45 excluding VAT for 100 embroidered College Hoodies.

Who pays for class sweatshirts: the student union or the students?

In the healthiest model, each student pays for their own sweatshirt by pre-ordering on the class Store. The student union fronts nothing and can even set a price slightly above cost to make a small margin that funds its other projects.

Embroidery or printing: which is cheaper?

For a logo over the heart, the gap stays small at tknp.io: for 50 Just Hoods College Hoodies, €16.08 excluding VAT per unit with an A6 DTF transfer, €17.88 excluding VAT with 8 x 10 cm embroidery, €18.69 excluding VAT with A6 DTG printing (a single decoration, most accessible colour, excluding shipping, indicative prices from 20 October 2026). For large artwork on the back, printing is the way to go; over the heart, embroidery keeps the edge with a more premium and more durable finish.

When do pre-ordered class sweatshirts arrive?

About three weeks once the pre-order has closed; the tknp.io Store shows everyone that date before they pay. Allow 4 to 6 weeks for the whole circuit: design approval, a pre-order window of about two weeks, production, then delivery. Launching the project at the start of the academic year means the sweatshirts get worn all winter.

How do you avoid fronting the money for the whole class?

Launch, on the tknp.io Store, a pre-order just for your class: everyone orders and pays for their size directly, and, if the sweatshirt reaches its reservation threshold, only paid orders go into production. Neither the association nor the organiser spends a euro, and there is never any unsold stock.
