Origine France Garantie: what the certification actually guarantees for a textile

The only certification that truly audits a garment's French manufacture: its two criteria, and what sets it apart from a plain 'Made in France' claim.

Origine France Garantie: what the certification actually guarantees for a textile

"Origine France Garantie" is the only certification that verifies a garment is genuinely made in France: every essential manufacturing step must take place in France, and at least 50% of the unit cost must be French, checked by an independent body. It's stricter than a plain "Made in France" label, which requires neither an audit nor a minimum threshold.

The two criteria behind the certification of a garment

Unlike a marketing claim on a textile product page, Origine France Garantie rests on a precise set of requirements, with two cumulative criteria:

  • Essential character: every step that gives the garment its essential characteristics (weaving, sewing...) must take place in France.
  • Unit cost: at least 50% of the garment's unit cost (materials and manufacturing included) must be generated on French territory.

The certification is granted by an independent accredited body, with a documentary review and sometimes an on-site audit of the textile manufacturer, and it can be checked through a number in the association's public database.

Origine France Garantie vs "Made in France": don't mix them up on a garment

Origine France GarantieMade in France
NatureA private certification, with a formal specA declarative label under EU customs code
Manufacturer auditMandatory, by an independent bodyNo mandatory audit
ThresholdAt least 50% French unit costNo precise minimum percentage
VerifiableYes, via a number in a public databaseNo, it's a manufacturer's declaration

A "Made in France" label can be true and honest without ever being audited; Origine France Garantie adds a verifiable number behind the claim.

What it changes for a custom merch project

One thing not to confuse: the certification covers the garment itself (where the textile is made, with which materials), not where it's later personalized. A Stanley/Stella or B&C t-shirt, printed in France, is not thereby Origine France Garantie: most blank garments on the market are made outside France. A personalization made in France guarantees where the printing happens, not where the raw fabric comes from.

If the French origin of the garment itself matters for your project, the only way to check it stays the manufacturer's certification number, not a claim on a product page.

FAQ

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What's the difference between "Made in France" and Origine France Garantie on a garment?

"Made in France" is a declarative label under EU customs code, with no mandatory audit or precise threshold of French value. Origine France Garantie is a voluntary certification, checked by an independent body, requiring every essential step of the garment's manufacture to take place in France and at least 50% of the unit cost to be French.

Can a personalized t-shirt be Origine France Garantie?

That depends on the blank garment used, not the personalization: the certification covers the manufacture of the textile itself. Printing done in France doesn't automatically make the garment Origine France Garantie if the raw fabric is made elsewhere.
