Screen-print transfer: how it works, and why it exists

The technique that prints the design on paper before heat-pressing it, so it can be prepared and stocked ahead of knowing the final garment.

Screen-print transfer: how it works, and why it exists

Screen-print transfer prints the design in screen-printing inks onto an intermediate sheet of paper, then heat-presses it onto the garment. Unlike direct screen printing, where the screen prints straight onto the fabric, the design can be prepared and applied later.

Screen-print transfer in practice

The principle follows classic screen printing (one screen per color, ink pushed through the mesh), but with an extra step: the design is first printed onto transfer paper, then stored as-is, before being heat-pressed onto the garment whenever needed. Direct screen printing, by contrast, prints the screen straight onto the fabric in a single operation.

This extra step brings a real advantage: the design can be prepared, tested and stocked ahead of time, before even knowing which garment or how many pieces it will end up on. Useful for topping up a direct screen printing order at the last minute, or for applying the same design across several different types of surfaces.

What to remember

  • Screen-print transfer prints the design onto paper before heat-pressing it, unlike direct screen printing which prints straight onto the fabric.
  • This extra step lets you prepare and stock the design ahead of time, before knowing the final garment.
  • It works equally well for custom textile merch and rigid surfaces, whenever you want to decouple printing from application.
FAQ

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Screen-print transfer or direct screen printing, what's the difference?

The printing principle is the same (one screen per color, screen-printing ink), but the order of steps changes: the transfer prints onto a storable intermediate sheet of paper, direct screen printing prints straight onto the fabric in a single operation. The transfer costs one extra step, but lets you prepare the design before knowing which garment it will end up on.
