Cradle to Cradle

Cradle to Cradle (C2C) is a circular economy certification: it attests that a product is designed from the start so its materials can be recycled in a loop or composted without polluting, instead of ending up as waste. It scores products on five criteria, with levels from Bronze to Platinum.

Cradle to Cradle in practice

The name stands against the classic industrial cycle, "cradle to grave": make, use, throw away. A C2C certified product is designed so nothing becomes waste: its materials return either to the earth (compostable without toxic substances) or to industry (recyclable without loss of quality).

The certification assesses five dimensions: material health, product circularity, the energy used to make it, water and soil stewardship, and social fairness. The level achieved (Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum) matches the lowest-scoring dimension: no shining on one criterion to hide the others.

For a garment, it's the most demanding label of the aisle: a C2C certified t-shirt must be fully recyclable or compostable, dyes included. It's also the rarest in textiles: the certification comes from the design and materials world, and few garment references carry it today. On custom merch you'll rarely come across it; it completes the grid of common labels, GOTS for organic, GRS for recycled, Fairtrade cotton for farmers' income.
