Fair Wear: what this label on working conditions actually guarantees

Fair Wear Foundation is not an eco-label stamped on a garment: it's a recognition for member brands that commit to having working conditions in their sewing factories audited, on criteria aligned with the International Labour Organization. Over 120 textile brands are members.

The criteria Fair Wear audits

Unlike a material label with a numeric threshold, Fair Wear evaluates a brand's commitment across its factories, around eight ILO-based principles:

• Freely chosen employment, no forced labor
• No discrimination
• No child labor
• Freedom of association and collective bargaining
• Decent wages
• Reasonable working hours
• Safe and healthy working conditions
• Legally binding employment relationship

The organization audits member brands' production factories and publishes an annual performance report per brand.

A brand commitment, not a logo on the tag

This is the most common mix-up. Unlike GOTS or GRS, Fair Wear doesn't certify one specific garment with a percentage or a per-reference license number: it's the company that's a member, rated on a performance level (Leader, Good, Fair...) covering its whole production. Some brands choose to display this status on the garment's tag, but nothing requires it: the guarantee covers the manufacturer's commitment, not a precise composition to check garment by garment.
