Screen-print transfer: how it works, and why it exists

Screen-print transfer prints the design in screen-printing inks onto an intermediate sheet of paper, then heat-presses it onto the garment. Unlike direct screen printing, where the screen prints straight onto the fabric, the design can be prepared and applied later.

Screen-print transfer in practice

The principle follows classic screen printing (one screen per color, ink pushed through the mesh), but with an extra step: the design is first printed onto transfer paper, then stored as-is, before being heat-pressed onto the garment whenever needed. Direct screen printing, by contrast, prints the screen straight onto the fabric in a single operation.

This extra step brings a real advantage: the design can be prepared, tested and stocked ahead of time, before even knowing which garment or how many pieces it will end up on. Useful for topping up a direct screen printing order at the last minute, or for applying the same design across several different types of surfaces.
