Stretched-out t-shirt collar: what makes a collar last

Ordering t-shirts for your team and want a collar that still looks sharp wash after wash? Here is why a collar stretches out, the details that make it last and how to spot them on a product page before you order.

At the foot of the bouldering rocks, a climber straightens the collar of his heather grey t-shirt with a small embroidered TKNP heart logo, while another, in an olive t-shirt screen printed with TKNP on the back, jumps onto the crash pad.

Stretched-out t-shirt collar: what makes a collar last

Four details help a t-shirt collar stay sharp wash after wash: a ribbed neckline, elastane in the collar, a neck tape and double stitching at the collar. On tknp.io, you can read them on the product page; the one for the JHK Man Regular T-Shirt lists all four.

What to know about the collar:

  • A t-shirt collar stretches out when its ribbed band, stretched every time a head goes through it, no longer springs fully back into place.
  • On a product page, a strong collar shows up through four mentions: rib (or 1x1 rib), elastane or Lycra in the collar, neck tape, double stitching at the collar.
  • Of the 24 t-shirts in the tknp.io T-shirts aisle read on 21 October 2026, 14 product pages mention at least one of these details; only the JHK Man Regular T-Shirt page mentions all four.
  • For care, follow the model's label and, as Stanley/Stella advises for its cotton garments, reshape the collar while it is still damp.

The team t-shirt comes out of the box looking spotless. A few months later the neckline ripples and sags at the back, and all of the merch looks tired, logo included. A stretched-out t-shirt collar shows from across the room: it frames the face, right above the print.

As with pilling, the choice of model matters: several product pages detail how their collar is built, and you can read those details before ordering. This guide explains why a collar stretches out, which details make it last, how to read them on a product page before you order your custom t-shirts, which models list them and how to care for the collar afterwards.

Why does a t-shirt collar stretch out?

A t-shirt collar stretches out when its ribbed band, stretched every time a head goes through it, no longer springs fully back into place. That recovery depends on how the collar is built: on tknp.io, the page for the B&C #E220 illustrates it, saying that its ribbed collar gives a neat, stable neckline.

The Office québécois de la langue française (the Quebec French language authority) describes a ribbed collar as a band of elastic knit sewn to the edge of a garment to tighten its opening. Its spring comes from the knit more than from the fibre: a cotton fibre only stretches by 5 to 8% (Wikipedia), so it is the rib knit that gives the collar its give across the width. Some product pages add elastane, for the spring back, and a neck tape or double stitching, to reinforce the collar seams.

What makes a t-shirt collar last: four construction details

On a t-shirt, how well the collar holds up rests on four construction details: the rib (1x1 rib), elastane in the collar, the neck tape and double stitching at the collar. Each one has a precise name on a product page.

The rib (1x1 rib), the knit that springs back

A ribbed t-shirt collar gets its shape back because its knit is made to open and close again. Rib knit alternates columns of stitches on the face and on the back; the Office québécois de la langue française credits it with good elasticity, especially across the width. In a 1x1 rib, one face column alternates with one back column. On tknp.io, that is the mention on the Stanley/Stella models in our aisle (the brand's own page for the Creator 2.0 says "1x1 rib at neckline"; the Blaster 2.0 has a high collar in 1x1 rib) and on the B&C #INSPIRE E150 page, which announces a 1x1 ribbed collar. French pages call it bord-côte or côte 1x1.

Elastane in the collar, for the spring back

Elastane in the collar adds the spring of the fibre itself: according to Wikipedia, elastane withstands 600% elongation before breaking and then returns to its original shape, while a cotton fibre tops out at 5 to 8%. Our article on elastane explains the fibre in detail. On a product page, look for "elastane rib collar", "cotton/elastane collar" or the Lycra brand at the collar: three t-shirts in our aisle list it, the JHK Man Regular T-Shirt, and the B&C Baseball and Perfect Pro.

The neck tape, the reinforcement of the collar seam

A neck tape is a strip of fabric sewn inside the collar, over the seam that joins it to the back of the t-shirt: it covers that seam and reinforces it, at one of the points that work the hardest. On some product pages, it runs from one shoulder to the other. The JHK Man Regular T-Shirt has a collar with "shoulder-to-shoulder taping", the Russell Authentic Classic T combines a "shoulder-to-shoulder reinforcement" with a "neck tape"; for the Creator 2.0, Stanley/Stella calls it a "self-fabric back neck tape". Eight of the 24 product pages in our T-shirts aisle on tknp.io mention it.

Double stitching, two seams to hold the collar

Double stitching means two parallel lines of stitches visible on the outside; at the collar, product pages present it as a reinforcement. The JHK Man Regular T-Shirt page says "double topstitching at neck, shoulders and waist", the Build Your Brand Heavy Oversize Tee page mentions double seams at the collar, and the Russell Authentic Classic T collar has a "double-needle finish". Check where it sits: for the four Stanley/Stella models in our aisle, the double stitching is at the sleeve cuffs and the hem, not at the collar.

Does a heavier t-shirt have a stronger collar?

Not necessarily: the fabric weight tells you how heavy the t-shirt fabric is, not how its collar is built, and the collar is a separate band. On tknp.io, the JHK Man Regular T-Shirt weighs 155 g/m² and its page lists all four collar details; the B&C #E190 Men weighs 185 g/m² and its page does not describe its collar. Fabric weight has its own effects on how a t-shirt holds up, which our article on the heavyweight t-shirt puts in figures; for the collar, the model description is what tells you.

How do you spot a collar that lasts on a product page?

A t-shirt collar that lasts shows up on a product page through four mentions: rib or 1x1 rib, elastane or Lycra at the collar, neck tape, double stitching or double needle at the collar. Each mention is an announced reinforcement; a page that mentions none of them does not let you judge the collar, either way.

On tknp.io, the Stanley/Stella pages in our aisle have a block that lists these details; on the others, they appear in the model description, at the top of the page. Pages in French use other words:

Double stitchingtwin-needle, double-needle, double topstitchingdouble surpiqûre, double aiguille, doubles coutures au col

Of the 24 t-shirts in our T-shirts aisle read on 21 October 2026, 14 product pages mention at least one of these details, and 10 do not describe their collar.

Which customisable t-shirts have a reinforced collar?

On tknp.io, the JHK Man Regular T-Shirt is the only one of the 24 t-shirts in our T-shirts aisle whose page mentions all four collar details; thirteen others list at least one. Here they are, with the words of their page:

Mentions copied from our product pages, read on the evening of 21 October 2026 (quoted in English where the English page says it, translated from the French page otherwise). The other 10 t-shirts in the aisle do not describe their collar: that is missing information, not a proven flaw.

Does a strong collar cost more?

Not according to these four pages: the JHK Man Regular T-Shirt, the only one of the 24 t-shirts in our aisle to list all four collar details, is also the cheapest of the four models compared below, for the same quantity and the same print.

ModelWhat the page says about the collar50 printed t-shirts, A6 DTF transfer
Man Regular T-Shirt (JHK)all four details€5.10 excl. VAT each
Authentic Classic T (Russell)neck tape, double needle€5.60 excl. VAT each
Creator 2.0 (Stanley/Stella)1x1 rib, neck tape€9.46 excl. VAT each
Perfect Pro (B&C)Lycra at the collar€9.80 excl. VAT each

Each amount covers the t-shirt plus one A6-size DTF transfer placed in one spot, for an order of 50 of the same model. Excluding VAT and given for guidance only, these tknp.io prices were read on our product pages on the evening of 21/10/2026, assuming: production at the standard lead time, the model's base colour, standard sizes, and shipping extra. For a few colours and for the largest sizes, the t-shirt's brand charges a slight extra, shown on the page as soon as you select them.

What sets these four pages apart sits on other lines: the Creator 2.0 is an organic combed cotton jersey, on a model whose page carries the GOTS, OEKO-TEX and Fair Wear Foundation mentions; the Perfect Pro page announces that it can be washed at 60° and put in the tumble dryer.

How do you care for a t-shirt collar?

To keep a t-shirt collar in shape, follow the model's care label and reshape the collar while it is still damp. Both habits come from the manufacturers' own instructions:

  • Follow the model's label. Washing and drying vary from one t-shirt to another, and the Lycra brand also points to the manufacturer's instructions: read the label before the first wash.
  • Straighten the collar while damp. In its cotton care guide, Stanley/Stella says to reshape garments while they are still damp after washing, then lay them flat or hang them to dry: when the t-shirt comes out of the machine, put the neckline back in place by hand.

The logo follows other rules, which vary from one technique to the next: see our washing instructions by print technique.

Put the collar to the test on a blank t-shirt

The safest way to judge a t-shirt collar is still to hold it in your hands. On tknp.io, several product pages let you add a single blank t-shirt to your basket: that is the case for the JHK Man Regular T-Shirt, the Russell Authentic Classic T and the B&C Perfect Pro, not for the Stanley/Stella models in our aisle. Gently stretch the neckline with both hands and let go, turn the collar inside out to see the neck tape, wash the t-shirt as its label says. With the model approved, you move on to the printed run, possible from 10 t-shirts of the chosen model, mixing sizes and colours: your custom t-shirts will have the collar you tested.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a V-neck reinforced like a crew neck?

It can carry the same reinforcements: on tknp.io, the only V-neck page in our T-shirts aisle, the one for the B&C #E150 V (145 g/m²), announces a neck tape at the collar, like several crew necks. Look for rib, elastane or double stitching under the same mentions.

Does a tumble dryer stretch out a t-shirt collar?

Follow the model's label: the answer changes from one t-shirt to another. The Creator 2.0 rules it out, and Stanley/Stella explains in its cotton care guide that a tumble dryer stresses the fabric's structure, at the risk of shrinking or distorting it; the B&C Perfect Pro, on the contrary, accepts it according to its page. Our article on laundry symbols explains how to read the square on the label.

Double needle and double stitching: are they the same thing?

Yes, both terms describe the same finish: two parallel lines of stitches. A product page may say "double-needle finish", like the Russell Authentic Classic T page, or "double topstitching", like the JHK Man Regular T-Shirt page. For how the collar holds up, what matters most is where it sits: at the collar, not just at the sleeve hems.

Is a sweatshirt collar built like a t-shirt collar?

On the Stanley/Stella Roller, yes: according to its page on tknp.io, this 280 g/m² crew-neck sweatshirt also has a 1x1 rib collar and a neck tape, in herringbone, plus a half-moon at the back of the collar.
