Recycled cotton: definition, blends and use for merch

Where recycled cotton comes from, why it is almost always blended with organic cotton or polyester, and how it affects the feel and the price of a printed t-shirt.

Recycled cotton: definition, blends and use for merch

Recycled cotton: definition, blends and use for merch

Recycled cotton gives a second life to fibres that already exist: cutting offcuts or worn clothes, shredded and spun again. To get a strong yarn, it is almost always combined with a carrier fibre, new cotton, organic cotton or polyester, which is why compositions show several percentages.

The essentials in 4 points:

  • Recycled cotton comes either from manufacturing waste (cutting offcuts, unsold stock) or from worn clothes: these are called pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled cotton.
  • It is almost always blended: in our catalogue, the models that contain it (the Stanley/Stella RE- line and the Heather Haze colours) hold 20 to 50% of it, always with organic cotton, sometimes with recycled polyester.
  • It is no cheaper: at TKNP, the Stanley/Stella RE-Creator t-shirt, half recycled cotton, comes to about €9 excluding VAT with an A6 DTF logo, against about €8.50 for the organic cotton Creator 2.0 (50 units, rates checked on 2 October 2026, indicative, shipping excluded).
  • To claim it on your merch, two proofs make the claim solid: the percentage on the composition label and a certification, GRS for instance.

A t-shirt factory produces cutting offcuts every day, and those offcuts are cotton. Shredded, they become fibres again, then yarn, then a new garment: that is the whole idea of recycled cotton. On a product page, though, it reads less simply than it seems, between percentages, blends and wording that sometimes promises more than the garment contains.

Here is where recycled cotton comes from, why it is blended, how it affects a custom t-shirt, what it costs, and how to talk about it without overstating.

What is recycled cotton?

Recycled cotton is cotton made from textiles that already exist, instead of freshly harvested cotton. The most common process is mechanical: the fabric is shredded, then pulled apart until its fibres are recovered, sorted and spun again. It is the most developed method for cotton.

Chemical recycling also exists: it breaks the material down through chemical processes to rebuild fibres close to the original ones. It remains less widespread.

Pre-consumer or post-consumer: where does recycled cotton come from?

Pre-consumer recycled cotton comes from manufacturing waste: cutting offcuts, leftover yarn, stock that was never sold. Post-consumer recycled cotton comes from clothes and household linen thrown away by their owners.

Our catalogue mostly shows pre-consumer cotton: the Stanley/Stella RE-Creator t-shirt uses recycled cotton from the maker's own cutting offcuts, and the Westford Mill tote bags use pre-consumer recycled cotton. Post-consumer material only appears on the polyester side: the Revive tote bag pairs that cotton with recycled polyester made from plastic bottles, 2.5 bottles per bag according to its product page.

Why is recycled cotton almost always blended?

Recycled cotton is almost always blended because mechanical recycling damages its fibres: their quality drops with each pass. To get a strong yarn, it is spun with a carrier fibre, most often new cotton, organic cotton or polyester. The compositions in our catalogue show it:

Does recycled cotton change the feel?

The feel of recycled cotton depends on how it is spun. In the Stanley/Stella RE- line, it is open-end spun: the RE-Creator's composition reads "Recycled Open End", and the RE-Cruiser's description announces a characteristic dry feel. In the Heather Haze colours of the Creator 2.0 and the Cruiser 2.0, on the contrary, it is combed and ring-spun with the organic cotton, like the rest of the garment. Our article on combed cotton explains what sets these two yarns apart.

Recycled or organic cotton: which one to choose?

Choose organic cotton for a fibre grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, recycled cotton to give a second life to fibres that already exist, or both at once: the Stanley/Stella RE-Creator blends 50% recycled cotton and 50% organic cotton. The two are not opposed, and most of our recycled cotton models also contain organic cotton. Our article on organic cotton covers its farming and its label.

How much does a recycled cotton t-shirt cost?

At TKNP, a recycled cotton t-shirt costs about the same as an organic cotton one: about €9 excluding VAT for the Stanley/Stella RE-Creator with an A6 DTF logo, for 50 units, against about €8.50 for the Creator 2.0. Recycling is therefore not a saving, it is a choice of material.

Rates before VAT and shipping, per item, with a logo in A6 DTF in one position and 50 units of the base colour. These orders of magnitude, checked on 2 October 2026 against our product pages, may change; technical fees not included (waived for verified business accounts).

Can you write "recycled cotton" on your merch?

Yes, and two proofs make the claim solid: the share of recycled cotton as a percentage on the composition label, and a certification that vouches for its traceability, GRS for instance. Our Westford Mill Recycled Cotton Tote thus carries recycled cotton certified by the body Control Union. The product pages of the Stanley/Stella RE- models only show the OEKO-TEX label: the certification of their recycled share should be checked before you claim it. Our guide to the GRS label explains what it guarantees and how to check it.

Which merch is recycled cotton for?

Recycled cotton belongs in merch that tells a story of commitment: the tote bag of a trade show or a festival, the t-shirt of a committed association, the collection of a brand that cares about its materials. Its heather colours, like Stanley/Stella's Heather Haze, and the dry feel of the RE- models make it a deliberate choice, to present as such to your community.

The right quantity, the other way to save cotton

The most economical cotton is still the cotton you do not make for nothing. Our product pages lend themselves to it: sizes are split when you add to the basket, and an order accepts mixed sizes and colours from 10 units. An order matched to your group's real sizes is cotton that gets worn, not just produced.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is recycled cotton less durable?

On its own, recycled cotton would be weaker, because its fibres lose quality with each mechanical recycling: that is why it is spun with a carrier fibre, which gives a yarn fit for clothing. In our catalogue, recycled cotton models keep the fabric weight of their organic cotton version: 180 g/m² for the t-shirt, 350 g/m² for the hoodie.

Can cotton be recycled endlessly?

No: with mechanical recycling, fibre quality drops with each cycle, which limits how many lives a cotton can have. Chemical recycling, which rebuilds fibres close to the original ones, aims precisely to go beyond that limit.

What does "Heather Haze" mean on a Stanley/Stella product page?

Heather Haze is a Stanley/Stella heather colour, and it is the one that contains recycled cotton: 30% in the Creator 2.0 t-shirt, 20% in the Cruiser 2.0 hoodie, the rest organic cotton. The solid colours of these two models are 100% organic cotton.

Why is recycled cotton not cheaper?

Recycled cotton is not cheaper because recycling adds steps: collection, sorting of textiles on several levels, shredding, then spinning with a carrier fibre. On our product pages, the recycled version of a t-shirt or a hoodie costs about the same as its organic cotton version.
