Bucket hat or cap: which to choose for a team or an event?
Bucket hat or cap? For a summer event outdoors, the bucket hat: its brim shades neck and ears, while caps give too little sun protection according to Australia's Cancer Council. For a club wearing its logo all year round, the embroidered cap. On tknp.io, each model is embroidered from 10.
What to know before choosing:
- Against the sun, Australia's Cancer Council recommends a hat that also shades the neck and ears, such as the bucket hat, and considers that caps and visors are not enough.
- The embroidered cap carries its logo on the front, about 50 to 60 mm high on a structured model; the bucket hat carries it at the front or on the side, small and flat.
- On tknp.io, the 10 bucket hats we select can be embroidered online, at the listed price; five come in two sizes, five in one size.
- The price of an embroidered bucket hat more than doubles from one model to another, and some cost less than an embroidered cap: the price table further down gives the detail.
Bucket hat or cap: the question comes back every spring, when a club gets the merch for its summer tournament ready, a festival kits out its volunteers or a team is about to spend the whole day outdoors. A custom bucket hat and a custom cap can both be embroidered with your logo, but they do not do the same job. The bucket hat, with no peak, casts shade all the way round the head; the cap shows the logo on its front and is worn long after the event. Here is how to decide by use, what gets embroidered where, and what the bucket hats we offer cost.
What is the difference between a bucket hat and a cap?
A bucket hat is a small, round, soft hat with no peak, whose brim runs all the way round the head; a cap is headwear with a peak at the front. Wikipedia describes the bucket hat as "a hat with a narrow, downward-sloping brim", and the French Wikipedia entry on caps defines the cap by its peak.
The bucket hat is also called a fisherman's hat, or "bob" in French. Our bucket hats page sums it up: no peak, no structure, a brim that drops all the way round the head. A cap, on the other hand, is either structured or soft: when it is structured, a stiff buckram sewn into the front panels keeps its shape, our caps page explains, and that front is what carries the logo.
Bucket hat or cap in the sun: which protects better?
In the sun, the bucket hat protects more than the cap, according to Cancer Council, Australia's cancer charity. It recommends a broad-brimmed, legionnaire or bucket-style hat that shades the face, nose, neck and ears, and it considers that caps and visors do not provide enough protection.
The cap keeps one advantage: its peak reduces glare, as the French Wikipedia entry notes. For a whole day in full sun, festival staff, race volunteers or a beach tournament, the bucket hat therefore covers the back of the neck and the ears better. Two bucket hats we offer also state sun protection on their product page: Beechfield's Cargo Bucket Hat says UPF50+, as does the Outdoor Adventure Sun Hat, a sun hat from the same brand.
Does a bucket hat keep the rain off?
The bucket hat started out as a rain hat: Wikipedia relates that the first ones, in wool felt or tweed, were worn by Irish farmers and fishermen against the rain, the unwashed wool making them naturally waterproof. Today, it is each bucket hat's product page that tells you whether it handles water, not its shape.
In our selection, the bucket hats are made of cotton, polyester, nylon or a blend, and two product pages mention a water-repellent fabric: Atlantis Headwear's Pico, in recycled nylon, and Beechfield's Outdoor Adventure Sun Hat. For a weekend when the sky cannot make up its mind, look for that word on the page.
Bucket hat or cap: which one is easier to pack and to wear?
The bucket hat goes in a pocket: soft, it "folds or crumples to fit into any pocket", as the French Wikipedia entry puts it, and our bucket hat range adds that it rolls into a bag. The cap, which the French Wikipedia entry calls light and practical, keeps its shape when it is structured.
For a whole day, a few details on the product pages matter: the ventilation eyelets of Beechfield's Reversible Bucket Hat, the sweatband of the Cargo Bucket Hat, the anti-sweat band of the Pico. On the cap side, Beechfield's Low Profile Vintage Cap also has ventilation eyelets, and its buckle adjusts the fit.
Bucket hat or cap: which one for which style?
The bucket hat has a relaxed look, while the cap changes register with its shape and closure. The French Wikipedia entry puts the bucket hat's popularity down to its relaxed, practical look, and traces its success in the music of the 1960s and 1970s, then in rap, from Run-DMC and the Wu-Tang Clan to PNL in France; the cap, for its part, appeals first to young people and sports fans, in the encyclopedia's entry on caps.
On a bucket hat, everything happens at the brim: short and turned up, it looks sporty, wide and falling, it looks outdoorsy, as the tknp.io bucket hats page describes it. On a cap, the closure sets the tone: a metal buckle dresses the model up, a hook-and-loop strap makes it sportier, as our caps page explains. Our inspirations even present a name embroidered in joined-up script on a bucket hat as a classic of weekends, festivals and beach clubs.
Bucket hat or cap for a team, a club or a festival: which to choose?
For a team, a club or a festival, go for the bucket hat for a summer day outdoors, the cap for a logo people wear all year round. This table starts from your group's situation:
| Your situation | Our advice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Staff or volunteers at a summer festival, outdoors all day | the bucket hat | its brim also keeps the sun off the neck (source: Cancer Council) |
| Beach tournament, regatta, race in full sun | a bucket hat whose page states UPF50+ protection, such as the Cargo Bucket Hat | the wording on its product page |
| Weekend that may bring rain | a water-repellent bucket hat, such as the Pico | the wording on its product page |
| Sports club, supporters, team wearing the logo all year | the embroidered cap | it is worn at the ground, on a terrace, on holiday (our caps page) |
| Raised logo | the cap | raised embroidery needs a stiff front, which the bucket hat does not have |
| Crowd whose sizes you do not know | an adjustable cap, or a one-size bucket hat fitted with a cord, such as the Pico (adjustable cord) or the Cargo Bucket Hat (elastic adjustment cord) | with no rear adjuster, a bucket hat needs a cord to absorb the difference (our bucket hats page) |
Nothing stops you from putting the staff in bucket hats and the club in caps, and even pairing their colours: Beechfield's Original 5 Panel Cap comes in Sky Blue on its page, the Flexfit Cotton Twill Bucket Hat in Air Blue. For a trade show or for clients, choosing a garment people keep has its own guide, the one on promotional clothing.

Does a bucket hat come in one size or in several sizes?
A bucket hat comes in one size or in two sizes, depending on the model: among the 10 bucket hats in our selection, five come in two sizes and five in one size. The Stanley/Stella Bucket Hat comes in S/M and M/L, the Reversible Bucket Hat and the Recycled Bound Edge in S/M and L/XL, the Recycled Reversible and the Outdoor Adventure Sun Hat in M and XL. Two of these pages translate the sizes into head circumference: 58 cm in S/M and 60 cm in L/XL for the Reversible Bucket Hat, 56 cm and 60 cm for the Recycled Bound Edge.
In one size, the Bucket Cotton, the Geo and the Pico state a 58 cm head circumference on their page, and three models have an adjustment cord: the Pico, the Cargo Bucket Hat and the Outdoor Adventure Sun Hat. Unlike an adjustable cap, the bucket hat has no rear adjuster: for wide distribution, our bucket hats page advises checking that the model offers an "internal drawcord". A two-size bucket hat, for its part, is split by size, like a garment. For caps, our cap size guide explains how to measure head circumference.
If you are torn between two sizes, nine of these pages, all except the Stanley/Stella Bucket Hat's, add the blank bucket hat to the basket from a single unit: enough to try it on before the run.
Where does the logo get embroidered on a bucket hat, and on a cap?
On a cap, the embroidered logo goes on the front panel; on a bucket hat, it goes at the front or on the side, kept small. Our cap embroidery page allows about 50 to 60 mm in height for the front panel of a structured cap, and small sizes on the sides or the back, above the closure. The detail by shape is in our guide to cap styles.
On a bucket hat, the crown is soft and has no backing: our bucket hats page recommends a short embroidered line on the front or the side, in flat embroidery and in a small size. The page for Atlantis Headwear's Geo provides embroidery areas at the front, the back and the sides, and, like the pages of the Bucket Cotton and the Pico, sizes them at 12 × 6 cm at the front and back, and on the sides at 5 × 6 cm for the Geo, 12 × 6 cm for the other two. Our embroidered bucket hat inspiration places a name in joined-up script measuring 60 × 35 mm at the front, and advises staying under 5 cm in height: beyond that, the brim cuts the text.
Raised embroidery, for its part, stays with the cap: without a stiff front to support it, the tknp.io bucket hats page rules it out on a bucket hat.
Which decoration technique for a custom bucket hat?
On a bucket hat, the technique you can order online on tknp.io is embroidery: that is the case on each of the 10 bucket hat pages in our selection, where patches remain on quote. Our bucket hats page also lists other techniques on quote, such as DTG printing or loop embroidery. The four cap pages read for comparison follow the same rule. On our cap embroidery page, which covers caps and bucket hats alike, every thread colour of an embroidered logo is included in the price.
How much does an embroidered bucket hat cost, compared with a cap?
On tknp.io, for 50 embroidered units, an embroidered bucket hat costs between €6.70 and €17.64 excluding VAT depending on the model in our selection, and Beechfield's Original 5 Panel Cap €7.25 excluding VAT, going by our product pages read on 26 October 2026: an embroidered bucket hat is therefore not necessarily dearer than a cap. These public prices are given as an indication, and each one applies to a single run: one model, one logo, one placement, without the verified-account discount.
They exclude VAT and apply per embroidered hat or cap, with the standard production lead time, in the most affordable colour of each grid; shipping is added in the basket. They come from the "Embroidery 8 × 10 cm" line, the only embroidery line in the grids of these pages, and our cap embroidery page makes the price of embroidery depend on the size of the logo, between 8 × 10 cm and 25 × 20 cm. These grids give no price for a smaller format, such as the 60 × 35 mm name embroidered on the bucket hat in our inspiration.
| Model | Type | 10 | 25 | 50 | 100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recycled Bound Edge Bucket Hat (Result) | bucket hat | €7.47 | €6.89 | €6.70 | €5.55 |
| Reversible Bucket Hat (Beechfield) | bucket hat | €10.65 | €9.98 | €9.69 | €8.44 |
| Bucket Cotton (Atlantis Headwear) | bucket hat | €11.56 | €10.85 | €10.54 | €9.26 |
| Bucket Hat (Stanley/Stella) | bucket hat | €15.93 | €14.96 | €14.51 | €13.08 |
| Flexfit Cotton Twill Bucket Hat (Flexfit) | bucket hat | €19.13 | €18.19 | €17.64 | €16.12 |
| Original 5 Panel Cap (Beechfield) | cap | €8.06 | €7.46 | €7.25 | €6.09 |
At 50 units, Result's Recycled Bound Edge costs €0.55 excluding VAT less than Beechfield's Original 5 Panel Cap, and the Stanley/Stella Bucket Hat €14.51 against €7.25, excluding VAT.
Bucket hat or cap, the embroidered run is ordered from 10 per reference; why that minimum exists, and how to mix sizes and colours within it, is covered in our guide to custom company clothing.
How can you see your logo on a bucket hat and on a cap before choosing?
To compare a bucket hat and a cap carrying your logo, the simplest way is to place the same logo on both, in the tknp.io designer, before ordering anything at all. On the page of Beechfield's Reversible Bucket Hat, the "Customise online" button takes you into the designer, already set on that bucket hat: you drop in your logo, and the preview shows its placement and its real size. Repeat the same step from the page of the Original 5 Panel Cap.
Keep the same logo, at the same size, on both: you see straight away whether it stays under the 5 cm in height that suits the bucket hat, and how it reads on the front of the cap. Nothing is paid before the order: the account and the designer are both free. The model you keep, bucket hat or cap, is then embroidered as a run from 10.
Frequently asked questions
Can you print a logo on a bucket hat instead of embroidering it?
Yes, a logo can be printed on a bucket hat, on quote. Our inspiration for a tourist office puts a one-colour logo on a bucket hat as a screen-printed transfer: the ink is screen-printed onto a film, then heat-transferred, because the curved crown of a bucket hat does not fit under a screen-printing screen. On the bucket hat product pages, embroidery is what you order directly, with the price shown.
Are there reversible bucket hats to customise?
Yes, two reversible bucket hats are part of our selection: Beechfield's Reversible Bucket Hat, in cotton twill, and Result's Recycled Reversible Bucket Hat, in recycled polyester. Their product pages state that both sides can be worn.
Does a logo embroidered on a bucket hat show up in photos?
Yes, a logo embroidered on a bucket hat shows up in photos when it is stitched in a contrasting colour at the front: our embroidered bucket hat inspiration notes that a name embroidered this way reads from the front and in photos. It recommends white or cream thread on a dark bucket hat, and one or two words in joined-up script.
How much do 50 embroidered bucket hats for festival staff cost?
To kit out 50 people with a bucket hat embroidered with the same logo, allow €484.50 excluding VAT on tknp.io with Beechfield's Reversible Bucket Hat, or €335.00 excluding VAT with Result's Recycled Bound Edge Bucket Hat. These totals, given as an indication, multiply by 50 the public price their product pages showed on 26 October 2026 for an 8 × 10 cm embroidery: excluding VAT, for a single placement, in the page's most affordable colour, with the standard lead time, shipping extra and without the verified-account discount.
