The right tote bag size depends on what it will carry: a light 140 to 200 g/m2 canvas is enough for documents at a trade show, a 250 to 340 g/m2 canvas holds groceries, and a gusset adds volume. At tknp.io, the lightest in our selection comes to about 3 euros excluding VAT at 50 units, logo included.

A well-chosen tote bag goes out every week: to the market, the office, the beach. That is where it does its job as merch, carrying your name far beyond the day you handed it out. The badly chosen one, too flimsy for groceries or too stiff to fold into a bag, ends up at the back of a drawer.
Which tote bag size should you choose?
Choose your tote bag's size by what it will carry, not by its price. For a trade show or a seminar, where people slip in a programme and a few brochures, a light canvas and long handles are enough: Newgen's Large Handle Basic Shopper, in 140 g/m2, is handed out in large numbers. For a shopping or shop bag that must carry bottles without losing its shape, move up to a 250 to 340 g/m2 canvas, such as Westford Mill's Canvas Classic Shopper.
For a brand that wants a soft, well-finished bag, Stanley/Stella's Light Tote Bag, in 160 g/m2 organic cotton with a washed feel, stays among the light canvases. To go beyond this selection, our custom tote bags page brings together 120 of them.
Which dimensions should you check on a tote bag product page?
On our product pages, tote bags are sold in a single size: what sets them apart shows in four markers. The canvas weight tells you what the bag can carry, the handle length how it is carried, the print area the maximum logo size, and the gusset whether it takes on volume.
These four markers answer the practical questions of the choice: will the bag hold the shopping, sit on a shoulder, leave room for the design?
What logo size on a tote bag?
A tote bag's print area varies a lot from one model to another: in our selection, from 26 × 30 cm on the Yoga Tote to 36 × 36 cm on Westford Mill's Canvas Classic Shopper, by way of 30 × 30 cm on Newgen's Large Handle Basic Shopper and 33 × 34 cm on the Premium Cotton Maxi Tote. It is the limit for the design, not an obligation to fill it: on a natural ecru canvas, a single-colour black logo printed large remains the cleanest choice.
The prices in the table assume a modest logo, A6 format as a transfer or one colour as a screen print. A large design covering the whole face is visible from afar in the street, but it costs more: compare both looks before choosing.
A tote bag with short or long handles?
On a tote bag, long handles go on the shoulder and short ones in the hand. 58 cm handles, as on Westford Mill's Premium Cotton Maxi Tote and Canvas Classic Shopper, allow both; from 67 or 70 cm, as with Newgen, the tote is worn on the shoulder. Westford Mill's Everyday Canvas Tote goes up to 83 cm, and Stanley/Stella's Shopping Bag 2.0 combines long and short handles on the same bag.
Which canvas weight for a tote bag?
Choose a tote bag's canvas weight by the load it will carry: from 140 to 200 g/m2, the canvas is enough for an event's brochures and programme; from 250 to 340 g/m2, it takes bottles and keeps its shape. The sturdiest of the selection, Stanley/Stella's Shopping Bag 2.0 (400 g/m2), can stand in for a market bag.
With or without a gusset?
Without a gusset, a tote bag stores flat and mainly holds papers. With a gusset at the bottom and sides, it gains capacity and stands upright, which matters on a shop counter or a stand. The Shopping Bag 2.0 has one, along with an inside pocket and a hidden press stud.
How much does a custom tote bag cost?
A custom tote bag costs about 3 euros excluding VAT at 50 units on the lightest in our selection, one-colour logo included, and drops to around 2 euros at 250 units in screen printing. Heavy canvas and organic cotton range from 4.50 to 11 euros at 50 units.
Quantity also changes the cheapest technique. On the Large Handle Basic Shopper, a run of 10 costs about 5.50 euros each as a transfer, against more than 13 euros in screen printing, which needs a screen; at 250, screen printing drops below 2 euros, and our article on screen printing explains why its price melts with quantity. Each model is ordered in at least 10 units, and several colours of the same model add up towards the price tier.
How do you spot a tote bag that lasts?
Turn the tote bag over and look where the handles meet the canvas: a stitched square crossed with an X spreads the weight, a single straight line gives way first. Stanley/Stella's Light Tote Bag and Tote Bag have their handles reinforced with that cross stitch and a top edge folded twice.
For a canvas that lasts, weight matters too: a 140 g/m2 shopping bag quickly loses its shape, while a canvas of 250 g/m2 and above keeps it.
Why avoid rock-bottom promotional tote bags?
Tote bags handed out at rock-bottom prices are often made of non-woven polypropylene or very thin cotton, and that is where the promotional bag disappoints. On such a light canvas, the ink bleeds through the fabric, the weave lets you see through it, and both canvas and handles hold up poorly: the bag loses its shape or tears after a few uses, and your logo goes with it.
That is why we don't sell them. The tknp.io range offers no non-woven polypropylene bags and no cotton canvas under 110 g/m2, and our selection starts at 140 g/m2: a tote bag people keep costs a few euros, and it works for you for years.
An organic or recycled cotton tote bag
For organic cotton, Stanley/Stella's Light Tote Bag (160 g/m2) and Westford Mill's Organic Premium Cotton Maxi Tote (200 g/m2, about 5.50 euros at 50) share the spot. For recycled, Newgen's Classic Heavy Tote Bag blends 60% recycled cotton, Stanley/Stella's Tote Bag combines recycled cotton and polyester, and the Shopping Bag 2.0 is GRS certified. Our article on recycled cotton explains what these labels change.
Which tote bag for a trade show, a shop or a brand?
For a trade show, hand out a light tote in volume: our guide to trade show merch shows how to balance it against meeting gifts. For a seminar, the tote bag carries the welcome kit, as in our seminar merch ideas. For a shop or a market, take a heavy canvas that works for groceries. For a brand, bet on the canvas and the finish rather than the size; and for a yoga studio, Westford Mill's Yoga Tote keeps the mat strapped to the outside thanks to its band.
See the logo size on the tote before ordering
To decide between a small logo and a large design, open the tknp.io designer from the tote bag's product page: place both versions on the canvas and keep the one that reads best, paying nothing before you order. The designer's step-by-step, from logo file to approval, follows the same steps as the article customising a t-shirt. Orders start from 10 units. Production takes two weeks at the listed rate; if your date allows, four weeks lower the price by 5%.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of a tote bag?
There isn't a single size: each model has its own. To compare, look at the print area, from 26 × 30 to 36 × 36 cm on the ten tote bags in our selection, the handle length, from 57 to 83 cm, and the canvas weight, from 140 to 400 g/m2.
How much does a custom tote bag cost?
At tknp.io, expect about 3 euros excluding VAT at 50 units for a 140 g/m2 cotton tote bag with a one-colour logo, and about 2 euros at 250 units in screen printing. A heavy or organic cotton canvas costs from 4.50 to 11 euros at 50 units.
Which weight should you choose for a tote bag?
From 140 to 200 g/m2 for an event bag that carries paperwork, around 250 to 340 g/m2 for a shopping bag that carries bottles. The heavier the canvas, the better the bag keeps its shape.
What is the minimum order for tote bags?
Ten units per model, mixing colours. Several colours of the same tote bag add up to reach the next price tier.
